Description
For a change, quite a flat walk with few hills or woodland. Small amount of pavement walking along quiet roads. Very muddy in places.
Plenty of interest on this walk, to avoid the worst of the mud on the Ridgeway Path, instead we pass Chinnor's heritage railway, a preserved listed behive kiln and look down on a disused quarry, now a lake. We still encounter mud afterwards as we make our way to Kingston Blount. We stop for an opportunity to purchase refreshment about an hour into the walk at the Cherry Tree cafe in Kingston Blount which has toilets for customers. Afterwards we continue to the pretty village of Aston Rowant and back to Chinnor, via the ancient Five Ways junction of ancient paths where there used to be habitation next to a brook and has plentiful snowdrops. The path back to Chinnor is very muddy in places. We pass Chinnor Windmill and cross the heritage railway at Keens Lane level crossing to the Ridgeway, back to the car park. A late toilet opportunity is also possible at the Community Centre cafe in Chinnor, making up for the limited amount of woodland on this walk.
Prepare
There will be some very wet and muddy areas so good boots are essential, absolutely not trainers, you may even prefer wellies.
Dress according to the weather.
Dogs
Well behaved dogs are welcome and will need to be on a lead in some locations.
We’ll probably not encounter livestock on this walk, but possibly mounted horses.
